In the far reaches of the Northlands the magnificent peaks of the Finsterkamm mountain range rise like a weathered skeleton against the Aventurian heavens. Today, a foreboding weight hangs in the air, tinged with a sulfurous scent that dulls the senses and weighs heavily upon the heart. Suddenly, flames burst forth, each beacon igniting the next in succession. They traverse from watchtower to watchtower, forming a chain of fire and smoke that eventually stretches along the entire Finsterkamm. And then the dread appears – a silhouette so vast and terrifying that it casts a pall over the sky: It is Naugadir, the ancient dragon, the bane of the Northlands, unfurling his wings and unleashing a terrifying roar...

Naugadir, the Shadow of the Northland, was a dragon of immense size. His scales sparkled like green emeralds and his eyes shone like glowing coals. He laid waste to entire villages, set the land and the sky ablaze. He drove the people of the Northland into fear and despair. His name was only spoken in whispers, accompanied by great fear. A wise old man, who introduced himself as the wizard Isenbart von Greifenfurt, turned to a band of well-known adventurers to rid the Northland of this creature.

Isenbart told them that they would need two relics to accomplish this dangerous task: first, a sword forged by the hands of giants. Some know it by the name of Grimring, others know it as the »The Blade of Destiny« (Klinge des Schicksals). Naugadir had stolen the magical sword and hidden it in his fortress. But the blade alone would not be enough. The heroes also needed a shield made of Endurium to protect them from Naugadir's flames. Endurium was an extremely rare magical metal that gave every alloy a black color and was therefore also known as »black steel«. It was as hard as a dragon's heart.

The dwarves of the Dark Ridge (Finsterkamm) had seen the wrath of this wretched dragon, laying to rest many of their own kin. With vengeance in their hearts they helped the heroes in their search for the rare Endurium, and together they descended into the Dwarven Mine (Zwergenbinge) where the metal lay hidden deep within the rock. With hammer and anvil, the dwarves forged a mighty black shield that would protect the heroes from Naugadir's flames. Guided by the dwarves and full of gratitude, the adventurers made their way back to the surface. In the tavern of nearby Reichsend, dwarves and heroes celebrated the success of their first quest and a newfound hope. They drank, danced and played at a long table. As the hour grew late the dwarves continued their merriment, but our heroes knew they could not fully celebrate yet. Retiring to a nearby inn, they lay their heads for what may be one final living rest.

With the first light of the new day, they said goodbye to their friends, embraced each other, and the Dwarven King gave them a crystal talisman for good luck. The heroes set off, and with Aves' blessing, their journey took them across the Northlands, through dark forests, up snow-capped mountains, and along ancient paths until they finally reached Naugadir's lair, an old ruined castle that served as his home and treasure hoard. The dragon was already waiting for them, for he had heard of their adventure, and his eyes were full of anger and fire. The adventurers were determined, but they knew they could not defeat Naugadir in open combat without the Blade of Destiny, so they devised a ruse to gain possession of the sword: using the Dwarf King's glittering talisman, which sparkled like a thousand stars in the sunlight, they lured Naugadir from his hiding place. With this ruse, the heroes recaptured Grimring, on whose blade they read the inscription: »Stand where others fall. This blade will be your destiny.«

Blade in hand, protected by the endurium-hardened shield, they faced the dragon. Naugadir's fury knew no bounds, for he had seen through the deception. His tail whipped back and forth in rage, and he spat fiery breath at the heroes. A long and fierce battle ensued. Again and again, the adventurers had to remain under the protection of the endurium shield until the air around them ceased to burn. Naugadir, however, became blinded with rage when he finally realized that he could not defeat the invaders with his fire breath. Desperate, he began slashing at the heroes with his sharp claws, trying to seize them with his teeth. Just as he was about to do so, a true hero stepped from behind the shield and plunged the sword Grimring deep into the monster's open mouth. Naugadir roared in pain and finally fell to the ground. Gasping, the adventurers fell into each other's arms: Naugadir's curse had been broken, and the Northland was free.

The heroes were celebrated throughout the Northland. Wherever they appeared, the people cheered and greeted them with joy. The battle against Naugadir, the Shadow of the Northland, became another verse of the song that is still sung about our heroes by humans, elves, and dwarves. May the bards of Gilgareth, with the aid of the Twelve Gods, keep their memory alive.
